Installing PDT
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Installing PDT is very easy. But it must be done correctly
to ensure PDT is initialized and that you create the special
subdirectory that PDT needs to store certain files.
You can install PDT in two ways:
* You can install it yourself.
* Or you can use Install.Exe that we include with PDT.
If you choose the first route and install PDT yourself, please
read INSTALLING PDT in your manual. You can browse through the
rest of this, but all the details you'll need are in your manual.
NOTE: Installing ALL of PDT's files may require a hard disk
or high density floppy disks (720k - 1.4m).
* You CAN install PDT on a 360k floppy disk if you DO NOT
install PDT.DOC. But the Install program will try to
install PDT.DOC. If you run out of disk space, Install
will stop.
* Therefore, if you use 360k FLOPPY DISKS, you may want to
install PDT manually. This way you can decide what to
install, and what you don't have room for.
ALSO NOTE:
* Install.Exe does NOT modify your Config.Sys or Autoexec.Bat
files -- because we understand that some people strongly
dislike having these files tampered with.
Depending on where you install PDT, you may want to modify
Autoexec.Bat yourself to modify your PATH statement to in-
clude the drive/directory where you installed PDT.
* If you've already installed an earlier version PDT, Install
WILL ask you if you want files replaced. This gives YOU the
option, on a file-by-file basis, of deciding which files to
replace (and which to leave as-is).
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Using Install.Exe
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
To use Install.Exe:
1. Log onto the drive/directory containing PDT's files:
PDT.Exe This file is required.
PDT.Psl These are your on-line help files. We
PDT.Doc strongly recommended that you install them.
Sample_1.Dat These are optional sample data files. We
Sample_2.Dat recommend that you install them and use
Sample_2.Str them to follow the examples in PDT's manual.
Register.Exe Included only with "user-supported" ver-
Translate.Exe sions, these let you, respectively,
- Register PDT instantly. See PDT.Doc
for details.
- Print PDT.Doc, translating the high
ASCII characters (lines, boxes, etc.)
into characters any printer can print.
See PDT.Doc for details.
2. Type INSTALL <Enter>.
Install.Exe should be on the same drive/directory as the
files mentioned above. But if it's elsewhere, just run
it like this:
D:\DIR\INSTALL <Enter>
Replace D:\DIR\ with the drive and directory where
Install.Exe is located.
3. On-screen instructions explain how to use Install. Basically,
there are just two steps.
a. Type in the drive/directory where you'd like us to
install PDT.
b. Tell us whether you'd like to also install the sample
files and utility programs.
That's it. Just confirm that you want to proceed and
Install will do the rest.

Details on Using Install.Exe, Setting PDTDIR
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
There are 3 important points to understand about instlling PDT.
* First, you'll probably want to use PDT regardless of which
drive or directory you're on at the moment.
Therefore, to ensure that DOS can find PDT, you should:
- Either install PDT on a drive/directory that's already
mentioned in your PATH statement (in Autoexec.Bat).
Type SET <Enter> to see what's on your PATH. And Install
will show you as well.
- Or, install PDT in it's own drive/directory, then add THAT
drive/directory to your PATH statement.
* Second, PDT saves and uses special files called "structure
files." They're essential to some of PDT's advanced features.
- Structure files MUST be stored in a special subdirectory
called PDT.DIR. And this subdirectory MUST be off of the
drive/directory that contains PDT itself (PDT.Exe).
Fortunately, Install will create this special subdirectory
for you. And, if you elect to install the sample files,
Install will copy your first structure file to PDT.DIR.
That file is Sample_2.Str. Again, we urge you to install
the sample files, then use them as you follow the examples
in PDT's manual.
* Third, PDT must be able to find itself when it runs. It
needs to know where PDT.Exe is to:
- Read options you select when you customize PDT. These
options are stored in PDT.Exe.
- Find it's on-line help files (PDT.Psl and PDT.Doc). These
must be installed on the same drive/directory as PDT.Exe.
- Find it's special subdirectory (PDT.Dir) to load structure
files.
continued . . .
As long as you install PDT on a drive/directory mentioned
in your PATH statement, DOS will be able to find and run PDT.
And, as long as you're using DOS 3.0 or later, PDT should be
able to find itself and the other files it needs.
Setting PDTDIR: DOS 1.x or 2.x
───────────────────────────────
But, DOS 1.x and 2.x may not allow PDT to find itself. So,
if you're using early verions of DOS, you should SET PDTDIR=.
You should also do this if PDT can't seem to find itself
even if you're using a later version of DOS.
If PDT can't find itself, type the following:
set pdtdir=drive:\directory <enter>
pdt <enter>
Replace "drive:\directory" with the path where you
installed PDT. And notice in the "set..." statement
that there are NO SPACES except after "set." This is
required by DOS.
To simplify things, you could do one of the following:
* Add "set pdtdir=drive:\directory" to your AutoExec.Bat
file. Then it'll always be set when you boot your PC.
* Or, run PDT from a batch file that contains these lines:
set pdtdir=drive:\directory <enter>
pdt <enter>
set pdtdir= <enter>
The last line clears pdtdir= once PDT ends. This frees
up memory (actually, environment space).
